Recovery for Outlook Frequently Asked Questions

If you have a problem that is not covered by this FAQ, do not hesitate to contact our technical support team.

Can Recovery for Outlook recover my Personal Storage File(s)?

The effective way to find out if a Personal Storage File is recoverable is to try the demo version of Recovery for Outlook on it. Visit the Download Demo page to get a free copy of the demo.

Product specifications with lists of items recovered and not recovered is available at the Product Information page.

Always backup your original corrupted Personal Storage File before proceeding with any recovery activity!

I have tried the demo. How do I decide whether to purchase the full version of Recovery for Outlook?

You can decide this by evaluating the results of demo recovery. The demo version recovers only three letters in the broken Personal Storage File while replacing data in other elements with demo placeholder. File attachments (if any) are not recovered by demo. Commercial version will recover all the files possible.

No additional element or feature of the original corrupted Personal Storage File is recovered by commercial version of Recovery for Outlook if not present in demo output.

For more information see the Recovery for Outlook online help.

What is the difference between Standard License and Enterprise License?

The license type refers to the number of copies to be used simultaneously. Standard license is intended for small business and individual use. One license allows one installation of Recovery for Outlook and servicing an internal domain up to 50 computers. Primary user of the computer where the Recovery for Outlook is installed may have another copy on their portable computer for exclusive usage.

Enterprise license gives the right to install two copies of Recovery for Outlook and servicing an internal domain of 250 computers total.

Both types of license do not have any limitations on the number, size and authorship of the Personal Storage Files to be recovered.

Please, note that to use Recovery for Outlook in data recovery service you have to obtain the annually renewed Franchise license!

See License Information page for full disclosure and assistance.

Why are recovered Personal Storage Files smaller than original ones?

This is normal. The damaged parts of your Personal Storage File will convert to zero size on output. The other common reason of file size decrease is when some of features of the original Personal Storage File are not supported and therefore absent from the recovered Personal Storage File.

Demo-recovered Personal Storage File is smaller because it mostly consists of demo placeholders than actual data.

I'm getting an Internal Program Error while using Recovery for Outlook. What can be done?

Please, run Recovery for Outlook in a logged mode and contact our support team with detailed description of the problem and the log file.

To create log file, please hold the SHIFT key while clicking the Recover button on the toolbar or selecting the Recover: item in the main menu. You can also press CTRL+SHIFT+R after launching the program.

I'm getting an error message that there's not enough free space. Is there a workaround for this?

Yes, if there is other drive with free space available (2-3 times of the original Personal Storage File size). Fix the Windows environment variable to use it. Do the following:

  1. Open System in Control Panel.
  2. On the Advanced tab, click Environment Variables, then click the name of the user variable (TEMP or TMP) you want to change.
  3. Click Edit to change value.
  4. Set path to the location where temporary data should be stored (e.g., e:\).
  5. Restart computer for changes to take in effect.
  6. Run the software again.

You can also use the special environment variable called OFFICERECOVERY_TMP to set the directory where Recovery for Outlook should store its temporary files. Use the method shown above to add/edit environment variable.

Is there any way to run Recovery for Outlook from command line (through Windows Start -> Run menu)?

Yes, you can easily run Recovery for Outlook from command line and use it in your batch sceneries. The format for this call is:

olr.exe <original filename with path> "<path to directory to store the recovered file(s)>"
(without angle brackets).

Please, note that the directory for recovered file(s) should be created before starting the recovery!

Command line mode supports patterns ‘*’ (replaces group of symbols) and ‘?’ (replaces one symbol).

What is the difference between Recovery for Outlook and Microsoft ScanPST utility? Does the result of the recovery improve if using both programs?

Microsoft ScanPST utility also known as InboxRepair tool is a powerful program for restoring Personal Storage Files. However, there are certain kinds of corruption which cannot be fixed by this utility, e.g. a partial demolition of the internal file's structure.

The fundamental difference between ScanPST and Recovery for Outlook is that ScanPST eliminates incorrect strurtures from the PST file, while Recovery for Outlook tries to restore and fix them. Therefore it is strongly recommended not to run ScanPST on the original corrupted file to prevent data loss.

About ScanPST on Microsoft.com:

Recovery for Outlook processes the file but when the recovered Personal Storage File is opened, it is blank. What's wrong?

This is a known issue. Sometimes a file writing problem could occur when the recovered file is blank after the recovery is complete.

Most often this occurs when there is antiviral software installed and activated on the user's computer. To fix the problem deactivate temporarily the antiviral software and restart the Personal Storage File recovery procedure.

As soon as the recovered file is saved it is necessary to re-activate the antiviral software.
